To get a sense of what the Philly Derby will be like this year, we recommend a fantastic book by a local author named David Kinney titled “The Big One.” The book chronicles the most famous of all striped bass derbies (well…until now!), the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass Derby. It has been taking place in the Fall of every year since 1946. The little island virtually shuts down for a month as people get swept up in derby fever. Men, women, and children, young and old, turn their focus towards one thing and one thing only: pursuit of the striped bass. They call out of sick from work, show up to school bleary eyed, and run errands with fishing rods sticking out of their car windows. Kinney gets into the thick of it, relaying the amazing catches, the ones that got away, and the great friends made out on the water. What will Derby Fever be like in Philly? I’m predicting seeing fishing rods on the Broad Street Line, too many late night Tastykakes, and plenty of awesome striper stories. More information on the book can be found here: www.davidkinney.net.
